Adversity & Amusement, I bleed Golf.

‘A willingness or tendency to subject oneself to unpleasant or trying experiences.’

You may be surprised to know this is not the Oxford English dictionary definition of golf. It’s one of several definitions of masochism. But it could be the former?

'I bleed Golf' is another way of saying ‘golf is in my blood, pumping through my veins’. It’s part of my identity, it’s not just something I do for fun. Despite the calamity I often face on the course, I’ll just keep on coming back.

As much as I admire the greats of the game, I’m never going to be like them. As a matter of fact, having played the game hundreds of times I may turn up to a game tomorrow and play as if I was a beginner. I’ll flog the ball around left and right, high and low through pine trees and water hazards. Who knows, maybe next week I’ll shoot my personal best? Great golfers are so consistent but the majority of us mere mortal amateurs who play golf are anything but.
It doesn’t matter though. In a sense it’s the difficulty in attaining consistency that keeps me coming back. I’m a golf masochist, I’m a bleeder. If I’m not playing it, I’m practicing it, or imagining playing it, or writing about it, or watching it, or talking about it.
You get the idea, perhaps you feel the same way?

Whoever coined the phrase ‘laugh in the face of adversity’ must have been a golfer, and most likely a bleeder. This brings me onto my next point.
I have experienced many, random, unusual and hilariously funny things whilst playing golf. Rogue squirrels, whacky swings, eccentric playing partners and people falling flat on their arse whilst backing out of bunkers. (To name a few).
My love for the game and the random absurd hilarity of it all are the two fundamental reasons why the I bleed Golf platform exists. You can find us on Twitter, Facebook and on the web. If you #lovegolf and like to #laughalot, please share your stories with us and join us in celebrating the conquests and conflicts of the amateur golfer!

12/12/13 - Happy Birthday to us!

Hard to believe, but one year ago today, we launched the IBG website.

Thanks to all of the golf obsessed people out there who've journeyed along with us and supported our #lovegolf #laughalot philosophy since 12/12/12.

We've met (virtually and physically!) so many people from a wide variety of backgrounds, personality types and skill levels. All of us united in our love for golf and a desire to laugh at the adversity this difficult but occasionally rewarding game sends our way.

Thank you to the many thousands of you who have visited our website and blog, followed / interacted with us on Twitter and Facebook and sent us direct messages and emails. As long as there's an audience for our satirical take on the 'conquests and conflicts' of the amateur golfer, we'll continue to forge ahead.

My personal highlight for the year was to have my very first hole in one whilst playing golf for the first time with Sean Tracey (@seant666 on Twitter). Sean has supported I bleed Golf right from the beginning and to have my first ace, whilst playing our first round of golf together, having met him for the first time that very morning was completely crazy - a day I'll never forget!

Signing off now but please check out the graphic below, created by IBG artist extraordinaire Herb McNally (@mctwentytwo on Twitter). It's a graphical summary of some of the best moments of our year, we're looking forward to laughing along with you and creating more great moments in the next 12 months!

#showusyournumber 2013

On Monday July 8th 2013 (5 days from now!), we're kicking off the second annual #showusyournumber celebration.

#showusyournumber 2013 is coming!

I say celebration because that's exactly what is. Your personal best gross score whether 124 or 65 is a celebration of your golf game. You own that number, it's your benchmark. Your number should inspire you and push you on to continually improve your golfing skills.

Last year we had a phenomenal response, with thousands of golfers from all around the world changing their social media profile pictures to show their numbers. We had participation from professional golfers on the PGA Tour, European and LPGA Tours. To read more about last years event including how it all began, please check out this post.

It's no coincidence that The Open Championship takes place during the 3 weeks of #showusyournumber 2013. Wouldn't it be fantastic if we could get some golfers particpating in the Open to show their number? We've already had a tweet from Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño who's indicated that he will get involved when the fun starts.

We'll provide updates during the three weeks of #showusyournumber 2013 in the form of tweets from our @showusyournumbr account, websiteFacebook page and on this blog of course.

All that remains is for you to change your profile pictures on Monday July 8th to show your number! More details are available in the graphic below (click to enlarge), but if you have any questions please feel to get in touch: info(at)ibleedgolf(dot)com

Zone FM

Turn your mind dial,
Tune in, tune out,
Your golfing perfection,
Now broadcasting on Zone FM.

The frequency is personal,
Not advertised,
It's out there, it's in you,
The space between trying too hard, not trying at all.

Noise distorts its call,
Rising too high, stooping to fall,
Mechanical thinking, swing sequence linking,
Your heart is sinking.

Turn your mind dial,
To Zone FM,
Waxing & waning
Never remaining

Grains of sand through your golf glove hand.

I bleed Golf

It's never just a game I play
It isn't a temporary fad that will fade away
I practice it
I play it
I watch it
I read it
I talk about it
I dream it
I sleep it
I eat it
It eats me
It beats me
It grinds me down
I get back up
I need Golf

I bleed Golf.

Swimmingly

Wow, it's been an amazing 6 weeks for IBG.

We launched the site on 12/12/12 and since then it's been non stop. Golfers from all over the world have been visiting the site and commenting on the various features and articles. We've had many touching and very funny articles submitted to our Fore!Word page. Lots of you have interacted with us on Twitter and shown your support.

'Defining Bleeders' - one of the many great articles on our Fore!Word page

Let's be honest, the site could be a lot better in terms of functionality and design. But, we did the best we could on the budget we had (which was almost nothing) and we feel we've created a perfect V.1 web platform. The plan is to improve on all fronts as we grow.

Personally I'm really pleased that people see the value in I bleed Golf. There are so many of you out there who 'get it'. When I first came up with the idea, I was worried that it was crazy nonsense that only made sense in my own head. Now I'm thinking maybe it wasn't such a bad idea after all, or PERHAPS all the people who like the site are equally as nutty as myself? Either (or both) of these work well for me!

The only minor downside for me is I haven't had the time to do any of my own writing but hopefully I'll get organised, inspired and motivated soon to get back to it. I've got some ideas floating around.

There's so much great stuff to come on the IBG front, here's a short sample of what's in the pipeline:

  • An IBG shop with some cool IBG merchandise (I cannot wait to wear my IBG branded hat on the course!)
  • We're going to try increase awareness of the site by giving out business cards, putting up posters in places where golfers congregate and IBG merchandise (if you're interested in helping with any of this please let us know)
  • The relaunch of #showusyournumber for 2013
  • An IBG style 'News' section will be added to the site soon.
  • We're also going to feature some charitable organisations and their golf related activities.
  • A 'Champion Flogger of the Year' golf tournament
  • An 'Article of the Week' feature which will highlight a different piece of user submitted Fore!Word writing each week
  • More competitions!
  • More videos!
  • Lots more #lovegolf & #laughalot

This is our first attempt at transferring our logo onto a hat,  we'll be selling them soon from  the website!

Thanks everyone for your support and friendship. Without your passion for life and love for the great game of golf, I bleed Golf wouldn't exist.

See you around,

Steve
